MPD Psycho (Manga)

A detective, suffering from multiple personalities, takes on a string of cases involving gruesome murders that eventually leads to a connection with him and the mysterious Gakuso organization.

MPD (Multiple Personality Detective) Psycho is a mystery/psychological/horror manga by Eiji Otsuka (story) and Sho-u Tajima (art).

The story revolves around Kazuhiko Amamiya, a former detective once known as Yosuke Kobayahsi who suffers from a multiple personality disorder. While Amamiya appears to be the dominant personality, inside his mind also lurks the stone cold killer Shinji Nishizono.

Imprisoned for killing a suspect (under the control of the Nishizono personality), Amamiya is paroled and hired by the Isono Criminal Research Lab. As Amamiya and his friends continue to investigate one bizare crime after another, a conpiracy begins to weave itself around them involving Amamiya's past, people with barcodes on their left eyes, an organization known as Gasuko, and the infamous American pop star and terrorist Lucy Monostone...


This is a series that I picked up recently. It's tone and style are similar to Death Note, but on a more extreme level. Published in America by Dark Horse, this is a very dark and graphic series. It's a combination of psychological detective mystery, conspiracy, and horror. It is rated 18+ for coarse language, violence, nudity, and disturbing imagery.

If you are really into dark stuff or mystery though, I recommend giving it a try. So far the first three volumes are out in the US, with the fourth set for a March release.

There has also been a 6-episode live action adaptation, but practically all of the major story elements are altered.
